About Hay Fever

Hay fever – also called allergic rhinitis – is the inflammation of the lining of the nose and eyes due to allergy. Many people experience it as seasonal allergy to grass pollens. Hay fever causes a blocked, runny and itchy nose, sneezing, and itchy, watery eyes.

Preventing and Treating Hay Fever

Avoiding the allergen, if possible, is the best way to prevent hay fever. You can consider staying inside when the pollen count is high, or when it’s windy. Avoid mowing the lawn, raking leaves or having an open compost heap. Splash your eyes with cold water or shower after any activities that put you in contact with pollen.

Medications to treat and help prevent hay fever are available from your doctor or over-the-counter at Life Pharmacy Meadowbank. Treatment includes antihistamines, corticosteroid and/or decongestant medications that may provide symptom relief. Your Pharmacist is available to discuss your symptoms and recommend a product that’s right for you.
